COMMUNITY SENSITIZATION PROGRAMMES: BSA conducts sensitization programmes at school level and community to educate and create awareness on child rights, child protection, anti-human trafficking issues and Substance Abuse among the local and government stakeholders; youths clubs, local samajs, Self Help Groups (SHG), CBOs, Panchayat Members, community leaders and children.
WORKSHOP AND CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAMMES 
  • Organize workshops to highlight issues and cases of violence against children.
  • Improved participation in activities addressing issue of violence against children.
  • Improved understanding and responsiveness of participants to address the issue of violence against children.
CAMPAIGN THROUGH CHILD RIGHT PROTECTION DESK (CRPD):
With the increasing number of child protection issues BSA has developed appropriate “Prevention” strategies with the aim to support and strengthen the community to reduce social exclusion and lower the risk of separation, violation and exploitation. Responsibilities are often spread across government agencies, local authorities and community groups to create an effective child protection system.
BSA conducts routine awareness campaigns with emphasis on prevention and child protection through setting up Child Rights Protection Desk (CRPD) 
  • Installation of CRPD in targeted Gram Panchayats, schools and Check points
  • Mobile intervention service model
  • Registration and intervention of cases.
  • Surveillance at Police Check points to monitor the movements of passing vehicles so as to curb child trafficking.

BUILDING RESILIENT COMMUNITIES: It has been proven that one of the best ways to prevent violence against children before it starts is by building child- friendly communities. In order to strengthen the community and to create safety nets with regard to Child Safeguarding, BSA has been successful to form Child Rights Protection Committees (CRPC) or Vigilance Committees (VC) and the Children’s Clubs even in the rural belt of Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Siliguri Municipality and Alipurduar District

VILLAGE LEVEL CHILD PROTECTION COMMITTEES (VLCPCS) UNDER INTEGRATED CHILD PROTECTION SCHEME (ICPS) IN KALIMPONG DISTRICT: 
Village Level Child Protection Committee (VLCPC) is a community-based organization formed by the participation of community members, children, Government functionaries and elected representatives including duty bearers, who are primarily responsible for creating and promoting a child friendly and safe community environment wherein all children’s well-being, safety and rights are protected.
Every village shall have a Child Protection Committee under the Chairpersonship of the village level elected representative (Head of the Gram Panchayat) to recommend and monitor the implementation of child protection services at the village level. The committee shall include two child representatives, Anganwadi workers, school teachers, auxiliary nurse midwives, as well as respected village members and civil society representatives.
VLCPCs will be responsible for monitoring, reporting and responding to the issues of child protection in the community. The VLCPCs will also plan and take up innovative activities to raise awareness in the community about the issues of local child protection concern.
In compliance to the direction of Kalimpong District Administration trainings, formation, orientations and capacity building of the CPCs under Kalimpong Municipality, Block I Block II were done as per the guidelines of Govt. of West Bengal. BSA has been able to facilitate the constitution of VLCPCs and conduct the orientation programmes under following areas in Kalimpong District:

“Home away from Home”
BSA established two Child Care Institutions boys and girls in Kalimpong District registered under Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act, 2015. The rehabilitation interventions include complete residential care, mainstream education, counselling, healthy, hygienic, recreation, extracurricular opportunities and child friendly environment. A system of monthly stipends for children has also been put in place. These initiatives are anchored at BSA Child Care Institutions (CCI) in Kalimpong. Girls and boys below 18 years of age – 100+ children live in this 'home away from home'. There is an emphasis on ensuring contact and engagement with families. Further, BSA strongly believes in the Back to Home policy and provides support to vulnerable families and children in various ways.
BSA CCI AWARD:
BSA has been awarded the best performance on Child Care & Protection, NGO run- Child Care Institute 2020 in West Bengal by West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights. A citation with Certificate and a cash award of Rs. 50,000/- (Rupees fifty thousand only) was received from Department of Women and Child Development and Social Welfare at Rabindra Sadan, Kolkata on the occasion of International Child Rights Day, November 20, 2020. 
 

REACHING CHILDREN IN DIFFICULT SITUATIONS

CHILDLINE 1098 IN KALIMPONG
CHILDLINE is India's first 24-hour, free, emergency phone service for children in need of Care, Protection and assistance. It is a project of the Ministry of Women and Child Development Govt. of India that operates a telephone helpline- 1098 for children in distress. It essentially provides emergency outreach services for distressed and deprived children in need of care and protection.  A phone number that spells hope for millions of children across India. Initiated in 1996, as a pilot Project in Mumbai, CHILDLINE is currently functional in 412 cities, across 35 States and UTs in India.
CHILDLINE started its operation from April 2011 - June 2019 as Sub-Centre under Darjeeling District CHILDLINE in Kalimpong under Bal Suraksha Abhiyan Trust (BSA). Around 746 Cases were intervened by the Sub- Centre.
Initiation of Kalimpong District CHILDLINE Collaborative organisation was started from the first week of December, 2018. Seven organisations from Kalimpong had applied to run the service in Kalimpong District. The District Magistrate Kalimpong forwarded his recommendation of BSA to the Ministry. In the first week of June, 2019, Bal Suraksha Abhiyan Trust (BSA) was selected with the approval of the Ministry of Women and Child Development Govt. of India as the Collaborative Organisation to run the Kalimpong District CHILDLIN. Kalimpong District Collaborative Service started its operation from the first week of July, 2019. Around 405 Cases (till March 9, 2021) were intervened by Kalimpong district CHILDLINE since its operation.

Every child has the right to grow up in a safe and inclusive environment

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Child (UNCRC) defines a child as any human being under the age of eighteen, unless the age of majority is attained earlier under a nation's own legislation. The Government of India ratified the UNCRC in 1992.
The UNCRC outlines the fundamental human rights that should be afforded to children in four broad classifications that suitably cover all civil, political, social, economic and cultural rights of every child:
